Shiatsu massage (in Japanese Shi = finger and atsu = pressure) is a therapy that originated in Japan in the XX century when Buddhist monkeys favoured the diffusion of principles at the basis of the Chinese traditional medicine.  
Shiatsu, is rooted into Chinese manipulations and traditional massages. The Shiatsu massage is based on breath, posture, perpendicularity and above all pressure. It is a manual technique based on skin stimulation. It is applied by exercising pressure through thumbs, fingers, palms, elbows, knees or feet thus bringing internal benefits to the body. This treatment is applied by expert people because pressure must be effective.

In 1964 a new regulation defined Shiatsu as a type of autonomous treatment different from all others: "Shiatsu therapy is a form of manipulation exercised through thumbs, fingers, palms of hands without any mechanical tools or other types of tools. It is based on pressure on the skin to correct internal disorders and improve or maintain healthy or treat specific diseases”.   

In 1940 a school was founded by Tokujiro Namikoshi, who was the first one to give a didactic organization to Shiatsu methodology. In Italy and Europe the Shiatus massage spread at the beginning of the 1970s. There are different Shiatsu styles; the most widespread ones are those invented by two masters: Namikoshi, Masunaga.

This treatment helps treat disorders like cephalalgia and migraine, backache. This treatment is effective against digestion problems, constipation and colitis. Also people suffering from stress, depression and insomnia have benefit from this treatment. Shiatsu is also advisable to tonify circulation, the nervous and immune system, favour the elimination of toxins and reinforce bones.
