Thalassotherapy is a treatment based on the different components of the marine environment such as water, sand, seaweed and mud that enable to achieve the so called “state of wellbeing”. The treatment consists in external applications and mud, seaweed or sea water baths in ad hoc pools. The sea water used in combination with the marine climate can help heal many diseases and has a revitalizing cleansing and antibacterial action. The main characteristic of sea water is salinity. It also contains dissolved gases like oxygen, carbon dioxide and nitrogen.
There are several types of thalassotherapy: climatotherapy, psammatotherapy, bath therapy, peloidotherapy. Marine climatotherapy is a useful technique to heal diseases such as lymphatic or allergic diathesis, chronic inflammations of the respiratory apparatus, skin psoriasis, convalescent status and childhood rickets.
Psammatotherapy uses sand and the properties of sea water. The application on the body surface is carried out at an average temperature of 50-60 °C; the thickness of the applied layer is generally not more than 3-7 cm. As a result, the sun heat warms up the sand in a homogenous way.
Every treatment sessions lasts 20-40 minutes; at the end there is a reaction period of 20 minutes in appropriate rooms. Psammatotherapy is an efficient technique to heal osteoartrosis, trauma like fractures or sprains, extraarticular rheuma, chronic inflammation rheuma. Bat therapy uses heated sea water at a temperature of 37-38 °C.
The treatment lasts about 20 minutes and it takes place in appropriate pools, in swimming pools or in the sea.
Thalassotherapy is available in several Italian wellness centres.
